Sergeant Morekwana Monyela, a dedicated and accomplished member of the South African Police Service (SAPS), has built a career defined by passion, determination, and an unwavering commitment to public safety. Currently serving at the SAPS Limpopo Airwing, he plays a critical role as an Airborne Law Enforcement Officer (ALEO) and Drone Pilot in Operation Vala Umgodi, where his expertise have proven instrumental in combating crime, gathering intelligence, and ensuring security.
Sergeant Monyela’s journey with SAPS began on 14 July 2008, when he successfully completed Basic Training at the Tshwane Police Academy. His early years in Visible Policing and Support Services provided invaluable field experience, shaping him into a well-rounded officer. Driven by a desire to make a lasting impact, he sought out one of SAPS’ most challenging environments: the Airwing. After completing specialized ALEO and Drone Pilot training, he quickly proved himself as a fearless and highly skilled professional, ready to tackle any aerial law enforcement challenge.
As a Drone Pilot, Sergeant Monyela is at the forefront of operations such as Vala Umgodi, a tactical initiative aimed at dismantling illicit mining and other criminal activities. Drones have revolutionised policing by offering real-time aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering, and efficient monitoring of vast, otherwise inaccessible areas. His piloting skills significantly enhance operational effectiveness, enabling swift interventions while reducing risks for ground officers. His ability to capture crucial footage from above ensures that law enforcement remains one step ahead of criminals.
Beyond crime-fighting, Sergeant Monyela and his team play a vital role in Search and Rescue operations. During recent heavy rains, when the province experienced multiple drowning incidents, including cases involving children, his drone piloting skills proved indispensable in locating and retrieving victims under challenging conditions. His work in these critical missions underscores the life-saving potential of aerial law enforcement.
Sergeant Monyela’s dedication to professional excellence extends beyond his policing duties. Recently, he earned an LLB degree, further strengthening his expertise and qualifications at the Airwing. His commitment to continuous learning and self-improvement demonstrates his determination to make a greater impact in both his professional and personal life. His unique combination of hands-on expertise and academic achievement makes him a valuable asset to SAPS and the broader community.
Sergeant Monyela’s dedication and exceptional service have not gone unnoticed. Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe and her management team commend his contributions to law enforcement. “This is one of the most sought-after careers in the academic and professional space. SAPS is privileged to have a skillful Drone Pilot like Sergeant Monyela. His passion for service is unmatched,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
Whether navigating the skies or patrolling the streets, Sergeant Monyela remains steadfast in his mission to uphold safety and justice, ensuring a safer future for all South Africans.
