“The Gauteng Department of Community Safety must still take a decision on recruitment for the Green Mamba Traffic Wardens in 2025 for the new Financial Year starting on 1 April,” said Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane.

Maremane was responding to questions by ProtectionWeb on how interested members of the public could become Traffic Wardens, first instituted by the Gauteng Premier in February 2023.

According to the Gauteng Traffic Department – under which the Green Mambas fall – there are now already close to 8 000 Traffic Wardens in the Province.

There is no clarity at present on further recruitment of Traffic Wardens in terms of expanding the programme, or even on replacing personnel attrition which is also taking a toll on their numbers as trained members look out for other career prospects, said Maremane.

“But at present the Gauteng Traffic Department is not in a position to call for any new Green Mamba Traffic Warden recruits – or even to replace personnel attrition – due to ongoing programme assessments for the purpose of taking a decision on recruitment,” Maremane said.

Traffic Wardens fall under the Gauteng Traffic Department and, according to Maremane, are authorised officers appointed in terms of the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 to perform certain duties.

These include:

• Regulate and Control Traffic on public roads
• As appointed Peace Officers they may also search for and confiscate any items which may be used to commit a crime
• Traffic Wardens may also conduct crime prevention operations
• Traffic Wardens are appointed by Municipalities or Provincial authorities
• Traffic Wardens may follow a career path to later become Traffic Officers if the authority that appointed them deems it necessary

Gauteng Traffic Warden graduation ceremonies were held on 27 November at 10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment and 3 SA Infantry Battalion in Kimberly (567 graduates), 4 Artillery Regiment in Potchefstroom (544 graduates), and 1 Construction Regiment at Dunnottar (399 graduates).

The young men and women, recruited and put through a shortened version of basic military training (BMT) at the four SA Army units, will boost crime fighting, traffic control and undertake other community safety duties in South Africa’s most populous and economically active province.

“These Traffic Wardens are the boots on the ground, ready to ensure that Gauteng’s roads are safe and that law enforcement remains effective. Their dedication and discipline will help tackle challenges such as reckless driving, illegal street racing, and congestion management,” the Gauteng government said.

“The Gauteng Traffic Wardens are a vital component of the provincial government’s strategy to enhance road safety and traffic management. With a growing population and increasing vehicle numbers, Gauteng faces unique challenges in ensuring efficient and secure mobility. The additional training provided by the SANDF is a proactive step toward addressing these challenges,” the provincial government added.

MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko, who attended one of the parades, reiterated the significance of the initiative: “This Pass-Out Parade is not just a celebration of their achievements; it is a commitment to the people of Gauteng that safety on our roads will always be a priority. We are proud of these wardens and the hard work they’ve put into their training.”

With the Traffic Wardens now deployed across the province, Gauteng residents can expect a stronger enforcement presence, quicker response times, and greater accountability on the roads. The wardens will also play a crucial role in addressing unsafe driving practices, supporting law enforcement during major events, and managing traffic flow during peak periods, the Gauteng government said.

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) on 6 July announced it will recruit 1 200 Crime Prevention Wardens (CPWs) to augment already existing initiatives in the ongoing war against crime. “The recruitment of the wardens will not only assist in responding to crime, but it will also help in reducing unemployment,” it said in a statement.

Macie said the initiative is vital in the light of high levels of gender based violence (GBV) and crime in communities. Macie addeed that there are many initiatives and programmes that the Department has to augment the work of the police.

“We will confront the scourge of crime from all angles. The police alone will not win this war. Hence, the wardens will work with all relevant role players to improve the safety of our communities. We want those individuals who are currently involved in crime prevention initiatives in their communities but are unemployed and meet the requirements to apply. Applicants must apply in for posts in areas where they reside,” said the MEC.

The wardens will be based in all ninety police stations in the province. The requirements for applicants include that they be between 18 and 50 years old; have experience in working in crime prevention environments; have no criminal record; and have a willingness to go for both physical and theoretical training (hence minimum requirement is Grade 10 to 12). A valid driving license will be an added advantage.

The duties will amongst other things include patrolling crime hotspots, do search and seizure operations, assist with stop and search operations and assist with identifying any other criminal or suspicious activities in communities. Furthermore, they will work under the supervision of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

In May 2023, Gauteng deployed an initial 3 200 out of 6 000 wardens, commonly referred to as AmaPanyaza after premier Panyaza Lesufi, across the province following three months’ training at the SA Army Engineer Formation base at Dunnottar on Gauteng’s Far East Rand and 3 SA Infantry (SAI) Battalion, the specialist Infantry Formation training unit in Kimberley. Further training continues for additional wardens.
