]]> The South African Police Service (SAPS) Operation Vala Umgodi National Intervention (Roving) Team successfully disrupted a large-scale smuggling operation along the Limpopo River in the Musina policing area. The operation, conducted on 11 January 2025, resulted in the confiscation of goods valued at approximately R500,000.

The intervention occurred around 11:20 AM near Tshirundu village when the team, on a routine patrol, received a tip-off about eight small boats reportedly loading contraband. Upon spotting the police, the suspects hastily fled back into Zimbabwe, abandoning the goods they were attempting to smuggle across the border.

The seized items included a variety of consumer goods, such as alcoholic beverages, energy drinks, baked goods, flour, and a chest fridge. These goods are believed to have been intended for illegal cross-border trade.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, praised the team’s swift response and decisive actions. She emphasized that the success of this operation underscores SAPS’s unwavering commitment to tackling cross-border crime and illegal trading activities.

All confiscated items have been registered at the Musina SAPS station for further investigation and processing. This operation reflects the SAPS’s continued dedication to maintaining security and combating organized crime along South Africa’s borders.

]]> Soldiers doing the hard yards on largely inhospitable border territory with Mozambique and Zimbabwe prevented 1 675 people from illegally entering South Africa in December. This is 1 370 more than were intercepted by soldiers deployed on the border protection tasking Operation Corona in November last year along the same national land borders.

All told the December “haul” of illegal immigrants handed to Department of Home Affairs (DHA) immigration officials and the SA Police Service (SAPS) in December totalled 1 850. A hundred and thirty-eight Basuto illegals were stopped on the Eastern Cape and Free State borders with landlocked Lesotho. With the exception of a lone Namibian, small numbers of illegals from Mozambique, Eswatini (36 stopped along the KwaZulu-Natal borders with both neighbouring countries) and 10 from Botswana found their plans to be in South Africa stymied by men and women wearing camouflage.

In total, soldiers confiscated narcotics and contraband worth over R9.3 million from smugglers/traffickers operating on the Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe borders.
