One such system, Triangula, was on display the Securex exhibition at Gallagher Estate last week. The system can be deployed in minutes by installing the Triangula Scout app on three or more supported devices, which can include Apple Watch Ultras. No special hardware is required, and no calibration process is necessary. The gunshot detection is close to real-time, and the system can cover large areas in diverse environments.

Triangula uses artificial intelligence (AI) to identify and separate the sounds of the muzzle blast from weapons to position gunshots, identify weapons (including calibre and if a silencer was used) and estimate gunshot directions – direction can be indicated on phones and watches fitted with magnetic compasses. It can distinguish between false alarms like cars backfiring and fireworks, for example, and be used to detect explosions, making it useful for identifying ATM and cash-in-transit (CIT) heists.

Triangula can map a shooter within four seconds, out to two kilometres – accuracy is less than 10 metres of the shot. Shot processing is done immediately, unlike many other systems that send data for analysis, which could take up to 60 seconds. As a specialised acoustic sensor is not necessary, Triangula does not need a high speed data connection.

The Triangula system was being showcased by South African company Risk Diversion, which specialises in forensic services (computer forensics, mobile device, and internet forensics). At Securex, the gunshot detection system was integrated into a control room in an ICP REVA Security vehicle as well as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which could be used to automatically fly out to where a gunshot was detected.

Risk Diversion Director Peter Fryer told ProtectionWeb that the drone can deploy autonomously within four seconds to investigate a gunshot. As Triangula sends cursor on target (CoT) data, any drone capable of receiving such data can be used to respond.

At the Securex demonstration, drone footage was being fed to a control station that was also linked with dashcam, body cam and other data to provide a complete command and control picture. Fryer explained that the system can do numberplate recognition, mobile phone detection, and more.

Also being showcased by Risk Diversion was the innovative Protectile less lethal solution. Designed to render conventional bullets less-lethal, when attached to a firearm it encases the factory ammunition in a plastic ball in order to avoid fatal injury. The plug of the Protectile is inserted into the muzzle of the barrel and a live round is fired. The lethal bullet is captured safely within the Protectile, hitting its target at about 100 joules – this equals a hard punch from a boxer. Effective range is up to ten metres. Protectile is an affordable less-lethal solution, uses existing weapons and ammunition, and allows for use of live rounds after firing the Protectile.

Risk Diversion specialises mainly in digital forensic services, and to this effect offers facilities for computer forensics, mobile forensics, video and audio forensics and cyber security, intelligence and analysis. The company has been working with the South African Police Service (SAPS) on digital forensic services since 2002. Its primary focus is on providing forensic services to law enforcement and security companies across the sub-Saharan African region.

Managing Director Bertus van Zyl told ProtectionWeb that developing computer vision software can take the load off pilots and alert pilots to, for example, movement while a drone is on patrol: a UAV will only call on the pilot when needed. This means pilots will not have to monitor their UAV continually, reducing pilot fatigue, especially during night operations. Artificial intelligence (AI) will also mean that it will be feasible for pilots to control multiple drones simultaneously.

Van Zyl explained that Aerial Works is developing its own computer vision software. The company is aiming for a future where one pilot can control a swarm of drones from a remote location and even have fully autonomous swarms of drones. As the company can fly its drones over the internet, operating multiple drones across different locations is not a problem.

Aerial Works and its UAV manufacturing arm, Sky Robots, is at the forefront of South Africa’s rapidly advancing drone industry. Founded in 2017, Aerial Works has established itself as a leading provider of premium drone security services in South Africa, catering to the military, police, private security, and mining sectors.

“Our competitive advantage is training, operations, and manufacturing,” said Aerial Works and Drone Guards Director Kim James. Speaking at the Securex 2025 exhibition at Gallagher Estate last week, she explained that by manufacturing its own UAV through Sky Robots, Aerial Works is able to provide a custom-designed aircraft suited to harsh African conditions and backed up by a ready supply of spares.

Aerial Works makes use of multi-rotor drones for operations requiring no more than a 5 km radius, and vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) fixed wing drones for operations of more than 15 km and requiring two hours or more time in the air.

The SRV22E VTOL fixed wing is manufactured in-house by Sky Robots, which was established in 2019 as a sister company. The UAV combines the agility and manoeuvrability of a quadcopter with the extended flight range and speed of a fixed wing aircraft. Made out of carbon fibre, it is lightweight and strong as well as water-resistant for inclement weather operations – it can also operate at night. It can carry a 1 kg payload for two hours. An innovative lidar landing assistance feature ensures smooth landings regardless of landing environment. Further enhancing safety is an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) transponder to avoid potential collisions with nearby aircraft. As it is manufactured locally, it is relatively cost effective to produce: training for two pilots, a control room and SRV22E all cost just R1.3 million.

In conjunction with Sky Robots, Aerial Works is able to offer a turnkey service, including drone pilot training for both multirotor and VTOL fixed wing drones, command and control vehicles and containers, drones, and software solutions for planning, execution and management of drone operations.

The patented bullet catcher took more than two years to develop but is now in production and attracting significant interest, according to Frik van Lill, Managing Member of North Tech Safe.

Bullet traps or catchers are a critical safety and environmental component in shooting ranges and firearm handling environments. They can prevent bullets from ricocheting off hard surfaces, which can cause serious injury to shooters and range personnel. By safely capturing and stopping projectiles, bullet traps eliminate the risk of stray shots and overpenetrations that could harm individuals or damage property. Specialised barrel-clearing bullet traps are also used to safely capture accidental discharges during firearm unloading, reinforcing safe firearm handling protocols in law enforcement, military, and civilian settings.

Van Lill explained to ProtectionWeb that old technology bullet catchers do not offer sound reduction, have a heavy backblast, create a blinding flash, and can result in the inhalation of smoke and particles.

North Tech’s new design addresses all these shortcomings. It uses multiple material layers rather than heavy sand to catch bullets. An innovative decompression chamber contains muzzle blast and redirects gasses out and away from the user. This means no blinding flash during weapon discharge, no smoke/particle inhalation, and sound reduction.

There are two models available depending on customer needs, with the Mk 2 designed for handguns up to .44 Magnum, and the Mk 3 for weapons like assault rifles up to R1 (7.62 mm) armour piercing. The Mk 3 is also suitable for shotguns. A Mk 1 is under development for less lethal weapons firing rubber bullets, bean bags etc.

The bullet catcher can be fixed or mounted to a vehicle, allowing it to be taken on deployments. Its angle can be adjusted so it is easier for muzzles to be positioned correctly, ensuring safe operation.

Each catcher is rated to accommodate ten accidental discharges, and comes with a certificate from SANAS (South African National Accreditation System). Once its service life has ended it can be recycled (95% of components are recyclable) or exchanged (including by courier).

Van Lill said cost is comparable to traditional bullet traps. Exhibiting for the first time at Securex, North Tech is seeing a lot of positive interest in its bullet traps, which “are selling nicely.”

A common problem with bullet traps is that people use them as bins and throw cigarette butts and other rubbish into them. Van Lill said that with North Tech’s traps, a vacuum cleaner can be used to quickly suck out rubbish and debris.

At its stand in Hall 3 at Gallagher Estate, SVI is showcasing multiple vehicles for the commercial and private security markets as well as police and law enforcement. SVI Business Development Director Nicol Louw explained to ProtectionWeb that the lightest, most cost effective solution it has is its B2 LITE protection solution for the driver and passenger doors of vehicles. Focusing mostly on civilian use, this partial armouring provides protection against small-calibre handguns (9 mm) in the area most likely to be targeted in an attack.

The kit consists of 13 mm B2 rated ballistic glass, with the windows still fully functional, as well as a Kevlar door sheet protecting more than 80% of the door area, for a total weight of 15 kg per door. Louw likens this to a bullet-resistant vest for vehicles, protecting vital areas. The B2 LITE armour costs around R65 000 per door for a Ford Ranger, and R55 000 for a Toyota Corolla Cross.

On the bigger end of the scale, SVI brought its MAX SWAT armoured vehicle, able to carry 12 crew and provide protection against assault rifles and other threats. It was designed for various sectors, from police and correctional services to private security and the military.

The 12-seater MAX SWAT can carry a payload of more than 2 tonnes. It can be fitted with an optional auxiliary power unit (APU) capable of independently running the air-conditioning system as well as any specialised systems (such as ground radars and long-range cameras) that the client may wish to include. These can be accommodated in two cargo bay areas at the rear corners of the vehicle. At Securex 2025, the vehicle is fitted with a mast-mounted Hensoldt South Africa Bushbaby 100 electro-optical surveillance system.

The SVI MAX SWAT has a build time of three months and is priced from R4.4 million, and is the most expensive vehicle on the company’s stand. On the smaller end of the scale, SVI displayed an armoured Jeep Grand Cherokee, an armoured Toyota Hilux fitted with a ‘drone in a box’ (ideal for mining security and other tasks) as well as its lightweight MAX 3 armoured personnel carrier, based on Toyota’s proven Land Cruiser 79 series chassis.

At last year’s Securex SVI unveiled its new Golf 8 GTI response vehicle with bullet resistance against AK-47 calibre rifles. The discreetly armoured hatchback offers protection against handguns and rifles up to 7.62×39 mm, including the pervasive AK-47.

SVI specialises in the armouring of civilian vehicles, luxury vehicles, security vehicles, and the manufacture of MAX-series armoured personnel carriers (APCs), armoured truck cabs, and armoured guard houses, amongst others. Since establishment in 2004, SVI has manufactured or converted approximately 3 000 vehicles, with customers in Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

Although SVI has a list of preferred vehicles it armours for the sake of ease of modification, the company can armour just about any vehicle, from Volvo to Maserati. Its typical private customers fit armour to BMW sedans and SUVs and Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser/Prado models. Apart from manufacturing, SVI has an armoured fleet rental division as well as a test track and driver training academy.

Deon du Plessis, Managing Director of Bullet Proofing Technology, explained to ProtectionWeb that the company’s ultra-light body armour plates are a fraction (1 kg) of the weight of plates 30 years ago (3 kg) for Level III protection. At a weight of less than 1 kg for a 250 x 300 mm multi-curve plate, BPT says its “Ultralight” plates are so light and comfortable that they can be worn for extended periods. The plates exceed the requirements of NIJ 0101 Level III, by also providing protection against the threats encountered in Southern Africa, being the 5.56×45 mm Ball (R4) and 7.62×39 mm Ball (Mild Steel Core) (AK-47) threats.

These plates are manufactured from UHMWPE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) fibres, which have largely succeeded Kevlar. UHMWPE plates are so light that they have neutral buoyancy and can actually float on water.

Du Plessis said BPT has invested substantially in order to manufacture these UHMWPE plates in South Africa, having spent R15 million on its factories. This new generation of armour plate is being promoted to the South African Police Service (SAPS), amongst others, as it is half the weight of their current plates, but only costs 50% more.

At Securex 2025, BPT is showcasing a range of armour solutions to meet different requirements and costs, from premium super and ultra-light solutions to heavier but cheaper steel plates. In addition to body armour, the company is promoting its ballistic shields, which can protect against handguns and assault rifles. These are ideal for anti-zama zama operations, for example, where more protection is needed than a bullet-resistant vest.

Since establishment in 1997, BPT has supplied more than 1.3 million body armour plates and over 2 000 armoured vehicle kits to customers around the world. The company’s main focus is on body armour plates and military vehicle armour, supplying armour to several of South Africa’s leading armoured vehicle manufacturers; BPT completes 300-500 vehicle armour sets a year, and 70-150 000 body armour panels annually.

The other 5% of BPT’s turnover comes from specials, including bullet traps, shields, aircraft, ship and building armour. Materials used include ceramics, Aramid fibre, armour steel, special polymers and UHMWPE fibres.

BPT is accredited by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) to certify ballistic testing on body armour (SANS 1658:2007 and STANAG 2920), vehicle armour (EN 1523) and military vehicle armour (STANAG 4569). This is a first for South Africa and BPT is currently the only South African company accredited to do any of this testing in their specially equipped ballistic testing facility, the company said.
