“The Gauteng Department of Community Safety must still take a decision on recruitment for the Green Mamba Traffic Wardens in 2025 for the new Financial Year starting on 1 April,” said Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane.

Maremane was responding to questions by ProtectionWeb on how interested members of the public could become Traffic Wardens, first instituted by the Gauteng Premier in February 2023.

According to the Gauteng Traffic Department – under which the Green Mambas fall – there are now already close to 8 000 Traffic Wardens in the Province.

There is no clarity at present on further recruitment of Traffic Wardens in terms of expanding the programme, or even on replacing personnel attrition which is also taking a toll on their numbers as trained members look out for other career prospects, said Maremane.

“But at present the Gauteng Traffic Department is not in a position to call for any new Green Mamba Traffic Warden recruits – or even to replace personnel attrition – due to ongoing programme assessments for the purpose of taking a decision on recruitment,” Maremane said.

Traffic Wardens fall under the Gauteng Traffic Department and, according to Maremane, are authorised officers appointed in terms of the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 to perform certain duties.

These include:

• Regulate and Control Traffic on public roads
• As appointed Peace Officers they may also search for and confiscate any items which may be used to commit a crime
• Traffic Wardens may also conduct crime prevention operations
• Traffic Wardens are appointed by Municipalities or Provincial authorities
• Traffic Wardens may follow a career path to later become Traffic Officers if the authority that appointed them deems it necessary

Fourteen of the injured members were discharged with minor injuries, and nine members remained in hospital for further medical attention, Siphiwe Dlamini, Department of Defence Head of Communication said in a statement.

Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Angie Motshekga visited the scene alongside Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, with the two briefed by the relevant authorities and medical personnel.

A statement by the Department of Defence (DoD) stated an investigation into the incident continues, and a case has been opened with the South African Police Service (SAPS) but gave no further details.

It is not clear if the driver who ploughed into the wardens did so accidentally or deliberately. It has been reported that the driver is a 36-year-old female naval officer. Bystanders said she accelerated into the group of students and tried to flee the scene before being stopped at the gate of the unit.

The DoD has dispatched social workers, psychologists and chaplains to the families of those injured and to the hospitalized trainees. “Interaction with the affected members and their families will continue.”

The Dunnottar base is used to train crime prevention and traffic wardens for Gauteng. In March, Lesufi oversaw the graduation of 3 000 new wardens there to fight crime and create jobs.
