Escaped Pollsmoor Inmate Rearrested Following Coordinated Manhunt

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed the rearrest of 35-year-old Yanga Wayithi, who escaped from Pollsmoor Correctional Centre in the Western Cape earlier this week. Wayithi, who was serving a six-month sentence for theft and trespassing, was apprehended at approximately 1:30 am on Wednesday, 12 February 2025, following a coordinated law enforcement operation.

Wayithi had been assigned to a grounds maintenance team at the facility before his escape. His successful rearrest came after an intensive manhunt, and he has now been returned to custody at Pollsmoor. He will face additional charges related to his escape from lawful custody.

National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale, commended the swift action by law enforcement, stating, “This arrest reaffirms our commitment to upholding the integrity of the correctional system. We remain resolute in ensuring that all offenders are held accountable, and that public safety remains our top priority.”

The department confirmed that a full-scale investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding Wayithi’s escape. “Appropriate measures will be taken against any lapses identified. Additionally, security protocols at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre are under review to prevent similar incidents in the future,” the DCS said in a statement.

Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services, Ms. Kgomotso Ramolobeng, also praised the swift action taken to apprehend the inmate. “It is encouraging to hear of the swift rearrest of the escaped inmate and the department’s commitment to closing any gaps in its current prevention mechanisms. We commend the success of the operation and those who carried it out,” she said.

This rearrest underscores the DCS’s ongoing efforts to enhance security, accountability, and public safety across correctional facilities nationwide.
