On Sunday 01 September, the South African Police Service (SAPS) held its annual Police Commemoration Day, honouring 39 officers whose names were added to the National Police Memorial at the Union Buildings.
Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, stated that those in attendance gathered “with a profound sense of reverence and gratitude” for the 39 members who lost their lives in the 2023/24 financial year.
Twenty-nine were shot and killed; one was stabbed and killed; five died in vehicle accidents; two were hit by blunt objects; one was burnt and succumbed to their injuries. One fell on an embankment and succumbed to their injuries.
“As we assemble here, we are united by a shared commitment to remembering those who have fallen, and to acknowledging the extraordinary courage and dedication they exhibited in the pursuit of justice and the protection of our communities. Each name inscribed on our memorial, stands as a testament to the ultimate sacrifice made by those who wore the uniform with pride and integrity,” said Minister Mchunu.
The Minister announced that SAPS is exploring the possibility as to how the organisation can assist families with civil claims against those responsible for the murder of police officers. “This initiative aims to ensure that justice is served, not just through criminal proceedings but also by holding perpetrators financially accountable for the pain and loss they have caused,” said the Minister
Further, the Minister announced the intent to establish a Task Team focused on wellness-related issues, dedicated to addressing both the physical and mental health needs of police officers. The Minister intends for every officer to receive the support they need to serve communities effectively and safely, he said.
SAPS leadership said it is committed to strengthening partnerships with sister departments, and in establishing cooperation agreements with provincial and local governments. “By working closely together, we can create a unified front against crime, share resources more effectively, and provide better protection for our citizens and our officers,” said the Minister.
Reflecting on the legacy of the officers commemorated the Minister urged those in attendance to not only remember their sacrifices, but also their enduring spirit.
“They exemplified the highest ideals of service and bravery, and their contributions will forever be etched in the fabric of our nation’s history. Let us also renew our commitment to supporting those who continue to serve, ensuring that their bravery and sacrifices are never forgotten.
“In honouring the memory of our fallen heroes, we also extend our deepest condolences to their families, who have endured unimaginable loss. Your loved ones’ courage and dedication will always be remembered and cherished,” said the Minister.
