The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr. Ian Cameron, has welcomed the news that the South African Police Service (SAPS), through intelligence-led operations nationwide, has seized 155 illegal firearms in the past week.
“While 155 illegal firearms may seem like a drop in the ocean given the widespread circulation of illegal weapons, these seizures demonstrate SAPS’ recognition of the problem and its commitment to addressing it. The success of these operations underscores the value of intelligence-driven and disruptive interventions in the fight against crime,” said Mr. Cameron.
However, he cautioned that without the full and effective utilization of the Intelligence Services’ capabilities, these isolated successes would not generate the momentum needed to create a lasting impact. Additionally, while the arrest of 14,165 suspects is commendable, these efforts will remain ineffective unless they lead to successful prosecutions and meaningful incarceration.
“Illegal firearms remain the primary tools of violent crime in the country. A concerted effort is required to remove them from our streets. This cannot be just another talking point—decisive action is long overdue,” Mr. Cameron stressed.
He also praised the Western Cape police for seizing 38 handguns in the province, emphasizing that in an area plagued by gang violence and senseless killings, removing these firearms has undoubtedly saved lives.
Furthermore, Mr. Cameron commended the SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Task Team for successfully rescuing an Ethiopian businessman from a kidnapping syndicate in Johannesburg. He highlighted that the rising trend in kidnappings demands urgent intervention, and strengthening the Task Team is essential in combating this growing threat. He expressed confidence that this rescue operation signals SAPS’ commitment to eradicating such crimes wherever they emerge.
