Originally launched to address South Africa’s overstretched public safety infrastructure, AURA today serves over one million monthly active users across the country. The system connects users in distress with private armed response and ambulance services, achieving response times as low as three minutes. The platform has since expanded to Kenya, Ghana, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with further rollouts planned for India, Sri Lanka, and Latin America.

“We wanted to democratise access to emergency response,” said Myers, “Only a small percentage of the population in many countries can afford traditional alarm-based private security. We built AURA to change that.”

API-Based Marketplace Model

Unlike traditional safety apps, AURA operates on a business-to-business-to-consumer (B2B2C) model. The company provides a backend application programming interface (API) to insurers, banks, telematics platforms, and third-party safety applications, including Uber, Discovery, FNB, MyWay, and Samsung. When an alert is triggered through any of these services, AURA’s system locates and dispatches the nearest available responder from its partner network.

Each responder is equipped with a locked Android device running AURA’s software, enabling machine-to-machine communication and location tracking. A central 24/7 control room monitors and supports all call-outs.

To build its supply network, AURA initially paid responders a flat monthly fee to adopt the technology, regardless of call volume. This helped establish the platform’s footprint before consumer traffic increased, giving AURA an early-mover advantage. Key private response firms now on the network include Fidelity ADT, CSI, and Axon, among others.

Expanding Into Global Markets

AURA is now addressing a different challenge in developed countries, police forces in the US and UK increasingly refuse to respond to unverified alarms due to high false alarm rates. In regions such as the United States and the United Kingdom, police have significantly reduced responses to residential and commercial alarm activations.

In the US, where states like Texas have over 12 million monitored homes, AURA is being deployed to fill the verification gap. It dispatches trained, vetted private guards to assess potential threats before authorities are involved. The service is currently being rolled out in 12 major US cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, and Seattle. In the UK, AURA has operated for three years using a gig-economy model, deploying licensed guards for first-response verification.

AURA refers to its growing international network as a “global safety network”, and is in active discussions with partners such as ring.com and Rapid Response, whose alarm monitoring services handle millions of alerts each day.

Technology-Neutral, Impact-Focused

Despite its growing footprint, AURA remains platform-agnostic. “We don’t build apps, we don’t sell panic buttons, and we don’t manufacture cameras,” said Myers, “We just close the loop, technology detects crime, but humans must respond.”

AURA estimates that it is currently saving five lives per day in South Africa alone. Documented cases include the prevention of gender-based violence, near-drownings, and support during premature childbirths. Beyond personal safety, the system is also deployed for telecom tower protection, university campuses, and other fixed infrastructure.

Strategic Outlook

Looking ahead, AURA plans to expand its global emergency response API, allowing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), travel insurers, wearable tech companies, and multinational firms to offer integrated safety support for customers and employees worldwide. The system will intelligently route incidents to either private responders, where public services are lacking, or to state emergency services, particularly in countries like Japan or Switzerland, where public systems remain reliable.

Expansion into India, Sri Lanka, and Latin America is planned for 2026. These regions are seen as high-priority due to high rates of gender-based violence, under-resourced public services, and growing urban populations.

As global emergency response infrastructure faces mounting strain, AURA’s private-sector, technology-driven model is being positioned not just as a South African success story, but as a potential global standard.

Online Recruitment Goes Live

The historic new online e-recruitment platform will replace the previous manual application system, with this shift is designed to tighten controls, enhance transparency, and eliminate corruption risks in the hiring process. Applicants are now able to submit their information digitally, reducing the chance of documents being “lost or manipulated.”

Importantly, SAPS reminds the public that applying is entirely free and any demands for payment are indicative of a scam. Two scammers have already been arrested for charging fees to hopeful applicants.

New Intake and Expanded Capacity

The Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, announced the upcoming recruitment of 5,500 new police trainees, with applications opening in June 2025, and training beginning in early 2026. This intake follows on the trend of aggressive recruitment, building on the previous 5,500 trainees already undergoing instruction this year, all of whom will be deployed by December.

Over the past three years, SAPS has added over 30,000 officers through Project 10 000, reinforcing both frontline and specialist units such as public order policing, forensic science, and detective services.

Reinforcements for High-Crime Areas

More than 4,000 officers will soon join the detective division, many of whom are being posted to 30 high-contact crime stations in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape, and the Eastern Cape. Retired detectives and those who left in good standing are also being brought back on a contractual basis. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI) will see a boost of over 785 additional investigators.

To support retention, SAPS is introducing a scarce skills allowance for detective investigators, adding to the existing service allowance.

Boosting Specialised and High-Risk Units

Specialised units such as the National Intervention Unit (NIU), Counter Assault Team (CAT), and Special Task Force (STF) are also receiving increased support. Members of these elite teams will benefit from higher scarce skills allowances as an incentive to remain in service.

Additional roles earmarked for similar allowances include hostage negotiators, divers, coastal vessel handlers, and airborne law enforcement officers.

Crime Intelligence, Forensics and Crowd Control

Crime intelligence capacity is set to expand with 300 new operatives currently in training. Simultaneously, 675 forensic analysts and crime scene experts are completing workplace training before joining forensic labs and local criminal record centres.

In the past two years, 5,000 public order police officers have been trained and deployed, significantly improving the state’s ability to manage large-scale protests and unrest.

Call Centres and Local Policing Strengthened

To improve emergency response, 575 new operators have been assigned to 10111 call centres. SAPS has also built 31 new police stations in the last five years, bringing services closer to communities in need.

A total of 150 station commander posts have been filled, particularly in high-crime provinces. These leaders are now required to complete induction and management training to ensure competent station oversight.

Promotion, Career Progression and Infrastructure

From 2018 to 2023, more than 57,000 officers have been promoted. SAPS is considering promoting a further 11,000 Constables, Sergeants, and Warrant Officers in this financial year. Additionally, 3,149 critical supervisory posts, including those under the Public Service Act, will be advertised and filled.

Plans are also in place to transition 80 civilian staff in K9 and Mounted units into sworn roles to better align responsibilities and improve operational integration.

Resources and Logistics

SAPS currently operates a fleet of over 43,000 vehicles. Investment is being directed toward expanding this fleet and improving repair turnaround times by hiring additional artisans and mechanics.

SAPS leadership have emphasised their commitment to operate “without fear or favour.” The new digital recruitment system is intended not only as a technological upgrade, but a signal of wider reform aimed at building a more effective, accountable, and community-focused police service.

The capacitation of both the detectives and crime intelligence units, albeit still far from the capacity needed, is a welcomed intervention as it will ensure that crime is prevented before it happens and is effectively investigated once it has occurred. “Since the establishment of the 7^th Parliament, the committee has been at pains to highlight the severe shortages within these critical components. While the 4 000 new detectives and 300 new intelligence operatives is welcomed, the number must be increased over time,” Mr Cameron said.

Furthermore, the prioritisation of the 30 high-contact crime police stations (stations that experience high levels of contact crimes, such as murder, attempted murder, rape, GBVF and assault cases in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and the Eastern Cape) is also a welcome intervention. The committee has always called for an increased focus on the top 30 stations because a reduction in crime rate in those stations will improve the national picture.

The 10111 call centre is a lifeline for victims of crime and the challenges facing the centre has been a major point of concern for the committee. The recruitment of 575 call centre operators will ensure that the system functions optimally for 24 hour, seven days a week. A system without a functional means of communication between the South African Police Service and the people is bound to expose the victims and the Chairperson highlighted his hope that the new recruits will positively contribute to enhancing this intervention. Similarly, the Chairperson welcomed the intention by the SAPS to augment the technological capabilities within the centre to ensure that response times are improved.

Furthermore, the prioritisation of budgets for vehicles must be welcomed in the context that it will ensure stations are able to respond timeously to incidents of crime and improve police visibility. “On a daily basis we encounter members of the community with the same complaint that when they approach the SAPS they are informed of lack of vehicles to respond to incidents of crime. The decision to prioritise police stations and police visibility units will ensure the necessary visibility to prevent crimes,” Mr Cameron emphasised.

The welfare of committed SAPS members has also been a priority area for the committee. The new measures announced by the National Commissioner, from scarce skills allowance to rank progression, will serve as a necessary incentive for the SAPS to continue serving this great country.

The high police-to-population ration was also a concern for the committee, and the recruitment of a further 5 500 officers will assist in reducing the ratio. It is important that there are enough and well-trained officers proportional to the population growth.

The committee has always maintained that crime is not only a police issue but requires a society-wide approach to combat. In line with this, the partnership with Business Against Crime South Africa to enhance technological interventions in crime fighting must be encouraged. As the SAPS look for ways to integrate and optimise their existing technologies, the Chairperson has urged them to engage the private sector so as to widen the scope for more solutions.

The Chairperson noted the splitting of the Visible Policing Division into Visible Policing and Operational Response Services. Also, the splitting of Detective Services and Forensic Services. The promised operational effectiveness will be monitored over time, but the Chairperson has urged that the split should not be cosmetic but geared to deliver enhanced services.
The additional capacity for the Forensic Science Laboratory must also be commended in the context of the importance of scientific evidence in convicting criminals.

Meanwhile, the committee has always called for effective consequence management against rogue police officers who are inclined to participate in criminal activity. “We welcome the dismissal of 392 criminals dressed in police uniform. Effective consequence management is needed to ensure that anyone that is inclined to act in contravention of the law must be surgically removed from the service,” Mr Cameron emphasised.

In line with this call, the Chairperson called on the SAPS management to ensure effective consequence management against Major-General Philani Lushaba who was arrested this morning. “The arrest of Major General Lushaba highlights the need for fit-for-purpose police officer at all levels. While the criminal case continues, the SAPS internal disciplinary process must kick in with urgency,” Mr Cameron concluded.

Some years ago Denel approached local universities to take part in the research and development of new generation aircraft: an unmanned helicopter (Prowler) and manned aeroplane (Small African Regional Aircraft – SARA). The Prowler was developed in conjunction with Armscor.

The resulting RW-UAS is day and night operable and is equipped with optical sensors and an optional radar sensor. The standard observation sensors include a thermal imaging camera, high definition colour TV camera, auto tracker, laser rangefinder and designator. The optional radar sensor offers synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imagery as well as ground moving object indicator imagery.

Capable of automatic vertical take-off and landing, the RW-UAS can operate and navigate autonomously, with 10 hours of endurance with the standard payload. With an additional 80 kg payload, the system has a four hour endurance. Maximum take-off weight is 560 kg.

With a fully articulated five-blade main and tail rotor system, Denel notes the system has a low noise profile and can operate from a variety of landing zones, even from the back of a vehicle and vessels, making it competitive in this weight class.

The RW-UAS has an airframe length of 5.9 metres, with a rotor diameter of six metres, and a height of 1.7 metres. It is powered by a 4-cylinder, 4-stroke turbocharged petrol or diesel motor, capable of propelling it to a speed of 200 km/h.

Intended applications include law enforcement, public safety, border patrol, wildlife monitoring, area surveillance, powerline inspection, disaster management, search and rescue, communications relay, and geological surveying.

The aircraft’s flight modes include Autonomous mode, with autopilot control in accordance with a pre-planned flight plan, including auto take-off and landing. Trajectory mode makes use of autopilot, which executes route commands from the Ground Control Station (GCS). A sense and avoid capability is included, along with communications fail mode, which executes an autonomous flight to a predetermined landing point. There is also provision for engine rotor failure, which executes autorotation and an autonomous landing.

“A data-driven approach will be used to identify violent crime hotspots and inform the allocation of policing resources alongside prevention measures,” President Cyril Ramaphosa said at the Opening of Parliament Address (OPA) on Thursday 18 July.

The President was outlining apex focus areas for the next five years, which will be driven by the Government of National Unity (GNU). After the National and Provincial Elections in May produced no outright majority winner, various political leaders were tasked to work together to form a Government of National Unity, comprised of 10 political parties.

In his address on Thursday, President Ramaphosa said the country must have capable, sophisticated and independent law enforcement agencies that can fight complex and organised crime.

He committed that the Government of National Unity will continue to tackle priority crimes, including illegal mining, gang violence, cash-in-transit heists and the construction mafia, through specialised police units.

“We will continue to implement the National Strategic Plan (NSP) on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), and expand victim support services, like the Thuthuzela Centres and GBV desks in police stations,” President Ramaphosa said.

In the current economic climate of South Africa, characterised by high crime rates and other challenges, it is essential that consumers make informed decisions when investing in products.

A couple of years ago, understanding surveillance products was not easy for consumers, and often reserved for the privileged.

In light of the civil unrest experienced in 2021, fears persist, and communities remain on edge due to the ongoing incidents of infrastructure sabotage and violent crime. Therefore it comes as no surprise that today, almost every other household and business premises has adopted some form of surveillance product.

The SA Police Service annual performance report revealed that there are not enough boots on the ground, another factor that will surely leave citizens feeling vulnerable.

This shortage of law enforcement officers has left many citizens feeling exposed, leading them to turn to the private security industry for protection and peace of mind. Regardless of the causes of the shortage, the consequences are clear: longer response times, reduced police presence in our country, and a sense of insecurity.
